On Tuesday July 11, 2006, the San Diego City Council passed an ordinance banning smoking at all City of San Diego beaches and parks. The ordinance took effect mid-August 2006 and includes all beaches from La Jolla to Sunset Cliffs.
Non-smokers in San Diego and throughout California have tired of being forced to smell second-hand cigarette smoke in public areas such as restaurants and parks.
Visitors can now expect a smoke free experience at San Diego's beaches and parks as well as a reduction in the litter caused by thousands of cigarettes being extinguished in the sand.
Solana Beach, a small beach community a few miles north of San Diego, became the first beach community in California to enact a no-smoking ordinance 2 years ago. Solana Beach officials have noted a dramatic reduction in cigarrette butt litter on their beaches.
The Surfrider Foundation (http://www.surfrider.org/) has plans to install theft-proof ashtrays in locations where smoking is now banned.
